“To promote public participation in caring for our world”
THE PROJECT
The project was facilitated by Cyril and Suzette Kruger with the registration of a section 21 company, Kelland Bird Sanctuary, which entered into a lease agreement with the Johannesburg City Council over a period of five years with an option to renew for a further five years. The intention is to form a public participation group called:
“Kelland Bird Sanctuary and Wetland Restoration Project”.
Initial work was done to set the structures in place and over the past few year carried out the work listed under. completed projects. Unfortunately after the duck pond washed away in late 2003 not much work was done as most of our time was spent in meetings trying to get the water flow back into the wetland.
Unfortunately the project has suffered a number of serious setbacks over the past few years. Where two years ago large numbers of the Red bishops and Masked weavers nested in the fragmites reeds only a handful appeared this year 2005/6. The loss of the duck pond was a heavy blow.

Hi Kruger family,
ReplyDeleteI live in the Willows Estate and would like to visit the bird sanctuary some time. I was there (at the entrance gate) recently, but it seems that it has been closed for a long time already. What has happened, will this situation change?
In anticipation,
Jacques.
