THE BENEFITS OF INDIGENOUS LANDSCAPES
With more that 20,000 flowering species of indigenous plants available in our country, colourful, water wise indigenous gardens are becoming more popular among property owners who have seen the advantages of indigenous landscapes. The effect which indigenous plants have on the ecology has now been internationally accepted and the move worldwide is to try and repair some of the damage which has been done, mostly over the past 100 years, by reintroducing indigenous vegetation.
Although some people are still sceptical about planting an indigenous garden we have found that once they become aware of the different results which can be achieved using indigenous plants they are pleasantly surprised.
Gardens can be formal or informal. Styles can vary from English cottage to Tuscany to Meadow, Modern or Tropical. In fact there is almost always an indigenous substitute for every species of exotic plant.
WETLAND PONDS
Wetland ponds with a marshland area adjoining the pond can make a major difference in a garden. Slow flowing water in an area where the birds can safely bath is also a big attraction for the birds. In our own pond we have Hadedea’s that wade into the water until only their heads and necks are visible.
Dragon flies and other insects attracted by the water also contribute to the increased activity in the garden.
The selection of plants and the position of the circulation pump are critical to the success of the wetland as these are what keep the water crystal clear. Usually we will construct two ponds with a narrow river flowing between them for best purification of the water.
A properly constructed and balanced wetland pond system is an asset in an indigenous garden.
WATERFALLS
Where the fall of the land allows the sound of water gently cascading over the rocks of a waterfall further enhances the atmosphere in the garden. These can be introduced in the wetland/marsh system as a further attraction for wildlife in the garden.
IMVELO NURSERY
IMVELO have their own nursery in the Kelland Bird Sanctuary and sell indigenous plants directly to the public. Just browsing through the nursery is quite an eye opener as to the variety of indigenous plants available. Not only are there plants with colourful flowers but the different color and textures of foliage make for exciting planting ideas.
NURSERY OPEN TUES TO SUN 8am to 5pm
